Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Earns "A" Grade for Patient Safety in Fall 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Elkin, N.C., Oct. 31, 2016 – Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital has again received an "A" grade for its outcomes related to patient safety, receiving The Leapfrog Group's top score in the recently released fall 2016 Hospital Safety Grade report. The hospital, which has received an "A" grade in six consecutive semiannual reporting periods, ranks among the safest hospitals in the nation and in North Carolina.

"Eliminating preventable harm to patients is an absolute imperative in healthcare. This continued recognition from The Leapfrog Group speaks to our organizational commitment to a culture of safety. Safe patient care is our number one priority," said Paul Hammes, chief executive officer of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.

"Protecting patients from harm is the most important charge for any hospital," added Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "We recognize and appreciate 'A' hospitals' vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe."

Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, and free to the public. Among the 2,633 U.S. hospitals graded in the Fall 2016 report, 844 earned an "A," 658 earned a "B," 954 earned a "C," 157 earned a "D" and 20 earned an "F." Forty-three out of 78 hospitals in North Carolina that were scored received an "A" grade.
