Hugh Chatham Named ‘Best Place to Work’ by Triad Business Journal
Elkin, N.C. — Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital has been recognized as a top-ranked hospital in the nation and in North Carolina in terms of the value the health system provides to the communities it serves.
The recognition comes from Cleverley + Associates, a national health care data and consulting firm which named Hugh Chatham a Five-Star® Community Value hospital, placing it among the top 20 hospitals in North Carolina for providing exceptional value to the community.
In its 12th annual Community Value Index® study, Cleverley & Associates measured the value that hospitals provide to communities in four areas: financial viability and reinvestment, cost of care, pricing and quality performance. Fundamentally, the index found that a hospital provides value to the community when it is financially viable, is appropriately reinvesting back into the facility, maintains a low cost structure, has reasonable charges, and provides high quality care to patients.
The index found that hospitals with the Community Value designation operate with a high degree of community value and continuously give back to the communities they serve. In 2014 alone, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital provided more than $21.5 million in community benefit and $4.36 million in charity care for patients unable to pay for services.
“Hugh Chatham is pleased to receive this recognition, because we strive to provide the highest quality of care available to patients and communities, understanding that it also needs to be cost-effective,” said Paul Hammes, chief executive officer. “This five-star hospital designation confirms that people who live and work in the Yadkin Valley and southwest Virginia have no need to travel far to get high-quality, affordable care,” he added.
About Hugh Chatham
Elkin, N.C. — Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital has been named the number one “best place to work” in the Piedmont Triad area in the large employer category (250+ employees) by the Triad Business Journal.
Dozens of companies of various sizes entered the 2015 awards program which was implemented by Quantum Workplace, an Omaha, Neb.-based firm. To learn more about the nominees and identify winners in each category (small, medium and large), Quantum conducted a survey that measured 10 employee engagement categories, focusing on items such as team effectiveness, trust in senior leaders, feeling valued, manager effectiveness, compensation and benefits. A random sample of nearly 200 Hugh Chatham employees were invited to take the survey and responded. Hugh Chatham has nearly 800 employees in all.
Words that employees used to describe Hugh Chatham as a place to work included: family, nurturing, patient-oriented, compassionate and friendly. They cited as a measure of the health system’s attractiveness as an employer that many people drive long distances to come to work. Employees also noted career ladders, continuing education programs for clinical staff, a Leadership Development Institute, and access to reduced pricing with the University of Phoenix as examples of how Hugh Chatham supports ongoing professional development.
In addition to health, dental and vision care, Hugh Chatham offers wellness benefits and paid time off, a 401(k) plan with company match and profit sharing. Employees also enjoy access to exercise classes and a wellness gym at no charge, a courtyard with tables to eat outdoors, a Christmas Club and onsite events such as uniform, shoe, jewelry and book sales.
“This award is especially gratifying because it reflects everyone’s effort to make our hospital, medical practices and entire healthcare system a great place to work every day. Every employee, physician, volunteer, and trustee makes a difference,” said Paul Hammes, chief executive officer. “Our culture of teamwork, respect and caring for one another is felt by our patients and their family members when they come through the doors of any Hugh Chatham facility,” he added.
Hugh Chatham has received several prestigious awards this year, including the Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Award, 2015 Most Wired Hospitals Award, and the Women’s Choice Award for America’s Top 100 Hospitals for Patient Experience (for a third consecutive year).
