Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Foundation Welcomes New Board Chair

ELKIN, NC, January 18, 2016 – The Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Bill H. Davis, Jr. to serve as board chairman. Davis previously served as a Foundation board member for nine years, and after rotating off, returns,to serve a three-year term as chairman beginning this month.

Davis succeeds Dr. James Harrell, Sr. who was chairman of the Foundation board for many years. “I hope that our Foundation board volunteers can continue - as former board members have done — to help local citizens understand and value the work that Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital does in this community. All of us have a responsibility as citizens to make sure that the hospital continues to grow and has the resources it needs to serve its patients,” he added.

Davis and his wife Linda live in Ronda and have three grown children. He explained that they both have long-standing ties to the hospital. “I grew up around the hospital. My mother worked in the business office in the 1940s, and I knew all of the doctors’ names,” he said, adding that Linda’s mother also worked at the hospital, as a nurse. Linda was born at the hospital and currently serves as a volunteer greeting and assisting patients and visitors in the hospital’s surgery center.

“I know how important this hospital is – we’re fortunate to have the best quality medical care you could have – especially for a community of our size. People don’t have to travel to Charlotte or Winston-Salem to get high quality medical care, because they can get their needs met right here,” he said, adding “It’s important that we support Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital financially so that it can remain independent and thrive in a competitive and rapidly changing healthcare environment. Citizens’ active support for the hospital and the foundation also help to keep Hugh Chatham strong as one of our region’s major employers.”

Davis brings extensive fundraising and capital campaign planning experience to the role of Foundation board chairman. For many years, he founded and owned Planning and Development Associates, a business that helped colleges and universities across the country to establish foundations and to plan and run capital campaigns. He also served as president of the National Council of Resource Development for two-year colleges.

His leadership and philanthropic involvement have also extended to co-founding the North Carolina Foundation for Soil and Water Conservation, a public non-profit tax-exempt organization formed to promote, protect and improve North Carolina soil and water resources to enhance the state’s economic growth and stewardship of the natural environment. He served as the organization’s first board chair in 2000, staying involved with the organization until 2014.

Davis explained that his experience with fundraising includes serving as Director of Instruction for Life Sciences at Wilkes Community College, where he wrote grants and did private sector fundraising to develop new programs at the college. He later became the college’s first development officer, leading a $2.2 million campaign to expand the campus and to add the civic center. He also worked to activate the community college’s endowment which had been formed, but wasn’t very active as a resource and revenue stream for the college.

A former teacher in Elkin, Jonesville and at Surry Community College, Davis holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Appalachian State University as well as teaching certificates and a second master’s degree in Counseling Education. He also holds a doctorate of Education degree (Ed.D.) from Highland University in Tennessee.
