Medical Oncology

The Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center at Elkin provides competent, compassionate and innovative care, including hematology and oncology.

Chemotherapy is the treatment of choice for many types of cancer. As a part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University, the newest advances in the chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer are available in our Elkin clinic, so patients can avoid the burden of traveling to a distant treatment center.

The Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center at Elkin provides the following services:

  • Chemotherapy/biotherapy
  • Treatment of chemotherapy side effects
  • Phlebotomies
  • Bone marrow biopsies
  • On-site lab testing
  • Access to clinical trials
  • Consults for inpatients at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital
  • Consultation and follow-up care
  • Peripheral blood smear interpretation
  • Genetic testing
  • Home health and hospice referrals

Radiation Oncology

The Radiation Oncology Department at Hugh Chatham Health has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation from the American College of Radiology. With the ACR seal, you can trust that your treatment will be provided with the highest levels of quality and safety.

Radiation therapy is frequently the treatment of choice for many types of cancer. Other times radiation therapy is given in addition to treatments such as chemotherapy. Radiation therapy begins with a treatment planning session, which carefully outlines the area of the body to receive radiation and the amount of radiation necessary. Treatment usually takes several weeks.

Because state-of-the-art radiation therapy and chemotherapy are available in Elkin, patients and their families can avoid the added burden of traveling to other cancer centers miles away.

Gregory Fiets, MD is a board-certified radiation oncologist with the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Department of Radiation Oncology and Medical Director of the Regional Cancer Center at Hugh Chatham Health. He and his team provide care at the center five days a week.

The Regional Cancer Center at Hugh Chatham Health offers patients improved chances for a cure with fewer side effects. This state-of-the-art approach, called intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) uses computer-generated radiation dose calculations. The radiation beam intensity is varied or modulated to allow exact dose delivery. The clinical use of IMRT shows excellent promise for prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, and lung cancer.

Mastectomy Program

Hugh Chatham Health offers complete mastectomy treatment and services. Recommended mastectomy fitters visit the patient’s home approximately six to eight weeks after surgery for a prosthesis fitting. In the meantime, a “softie” and pillow are provided for the patient’s comfort during the recovery period. This program is part of Hugh Chatham’s Cancer Support Services program. For additional information about Support Services, call 336-527-7132.

Not only do patients in our clinic have access to the latest advances in radiation oncology and chemotherapy treatment, but our patients also have access to clinical trials. Patients in the Elkin clinic are provided the same options as patients cared for in the Winston-Salem clinic.

We have staff on call to assist patients after hours. This provides our patients with continuity of care and reduces the number of emergency room visits.

Hugh Chatham Health now offers patients improved chances for cure with fewer side effects. This state-of-the-art approach, called IMRT, uses computer-generated radiation dose calculations. The radiation beam intensity is varied or modulated to allow exact dose delivery.
